Exam Skills:WritingSpeaking

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Praha je větší než Brno.

Prague is bigger than Brno.

To je nejlepší restaurace v Praze.

That is the best restaurant in Prague.

Moje sestra je mladší než já.

My sister is younger than me.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Přídavná jména mají tři stupně: základní (pozitiv), druhý (komparativ) a třetí (superlativ).

PozitivKomparativSuperlativ
novýnovějšínejnovější
starýstaršínejstarší
mladýmladšínejmladší
velkývětšínejvětší
malýmenšínejmenší
dobrýlepšínejlepší
špatnýhoršínejhorší

Pravidelné tvoření: Koncovka -ější (nový → novější) nebo -ší (starý → starší). Superlativ vždy přidává předponu nej-.

Srovnání: Komparativ + než: Praha je větší než Brno. Stejné: tak ... jako: Je tak vysoký jako jeho bratr.

Learners overuse -ější for adjectives that take -ší, and forget irregular forms like lepší, horší, větší. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses 'more/most' or '-er/-est' — the Czech suffix system (-ější/-ší + nej-) is more systematic but requires memorizing which suffix to use.

Common Error Patterns

Used wrong comparison suffix (-ější instead of -ší or vice versa)

Review which adjectives take -ější (most with stems ending in a consonant cluster) vs -ší (short stems)

Used regular comparison for an irregular adjective

Memorize key irregular forms: dobrý→lepší, špatný→horší, velký→větší, malý→menší

Praha je větší než Brno.

Prague is bigger than Brno.

Irregular comparative: velký → větší. Comparison uses než (than).

To je nejlepší restaurace v Praze.

That is the best restaurant in Prague.

Irregular superlative: dobrý → lepší → nejlepší. Prefix nej- always marks superlative.

Moje sestra je mladší než já.

My sister is younger than me.

Regular -ší comparative: mladý → mladší.
