6. pád – přídavná jména

Locative case of adjectives: masculine/neuter -ém/-ím, feminine -é/-í

Learning Goal

Can use adjectives correctly in the locative case to describe locations, topics, and qualities

Exam Skills:WritingSpeaking

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Bydlím v malém městě.

I live in a small town.

Mluvíme o české kultuře.

We are talking about Czech culture.

Na jarním festivalu je krásně.

It is beautiful at the spring festival.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Apply this grammar in A1 course exercises

Practice Exercises
Learners mix up -ém and -é endings (masculine vs feminine) and forget the hard/soft distinction in locative adjectives. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English adjectives are invariable, so tracking gender + case + hard/soft simultaneously is overwhelming. Students often use the nominative adjective form after prepositions.

Common Error Patterns

Wrong locative adjective ending for the noun's gender (e.g., -é for masculine instead of -ém)

M/N locative: -ém (hard) or -ím (soft). F locative: -é (hard) or -í (soft). Always match the noun's gender.

Confused hard and soft adjective locative endings (e.g., -ém for a soft adjective)

Hard adjectives (nový, starý): -ém (M/N), -é (F). Soft adjectives (cizí, jarní): -ím (M/N), -í (F).

Bydlím v malém městě.

I live in a small town.

Neuter locative: malé → malém. Masculine and neuter share the same adjective ending (-ém) in locative.

Mluvíme o české kultuře.

We are talking about Czech culture.

Feminine locative: česká → české. Hard feminine adjectives take -é in locative.

Na jarním festivalu je krásně.

It is beautiful at the spring festival.

Masculine locative, soft adjective: jarní → jarním. Soft adjectives take -ím for M/N in locative.
