Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Jdu na poštu.

I am going to the post office.

Koupila jsem to pro maminku.

I bought it for mom.

Zaplatil za to sto korun.

He paid a hundred crowns for it.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Některé předložky vždy vyžadují 4. pád (akuzativ). Nejčastější jsou:

PředložkaVýznamPříklad
nana (směr), pro (účel)Jdu na poštu.
propro (koho/co)To je pro tebe.
přespřes, skrzJdeme přes most.

Learners confuse na + accusative (direction) with na + locative (location), and overgeneralize one case to all preposition uses. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English prepositions don't change noun forms, so remembering which case each preposition takes is a major challenge. The dual-case na (acc for direction, loc for location) is especially confusing.

Common Error Patterns

Used wrong case after a preposition (e.g., locative instead of accusative with directional na)

Na + acc = direction (kam?): Jdu na poštu. Na + loc = location (kde?): Jsem na poště. Ask kam? or kde? to decide.

Correct preposition but wrong noun/adjective ending for accusative

After accusative prepositions, apply accusative endings: F -u/-i, M anim. = genitive, M inanim./N = nominative.

Jdu na poštu.

I am going to the post office.

Na + accusative indicates direction (kam? = where to?). Compare: Jsem na poště (na + locative = location).

Koupila jsem to pro maminku.

I bought it for mom.

Pro always takes accusative. Note: maminka → maminku (feminine accusative).

Zaplatil za to sto korun.

He paid a hundred crowns for it.

Za + accusative expresses price/exchange. Also used for time: za hodinu (in an hour).
