Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Pracuji v kanceláři.

I work in an office.

Mluvíme o knize.

We are talking about a book.

Bydlíme v Evropě.

We live in Europe.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Podstatná jména ženského rodu v 6. pádě mění koncovku podle svého vzoru.

Vzor1. pád6. pádPříklad
žena-a-e/-ěškola → ve škole
růže-e-iulice → v ulici
píseň-∅ (souhláska)-ikancelář → v kanceláři
kost-∅ (souhláska)-inoc → v noci

Alternace u vzoru žena: Před -e/-ě platí stejné změny: h → z (kniha → o knize), k → c (matka → o matce), ch → š (střecha → na střeše).

Výjimky: Některá slova mají lokál na -e i -ě: v práci (ne *v práce), na zahradě. Vzor růže a píseň mají vždy -i, bez alternací.

Pozor: -a → -ě po retnicích (b, p, m, v, f): v Evropě (ne *v Evrope).

Practice Exercises
Learners forget consonant alternations in žena-type nouns and confuse -e/-ě with -i endings across declension patterns. 🇬🇧 English speakers: No locative case in English means all these patterns are new. The distinction between žena-type (-e/-ě) and růže-type (-i) requires memorizing each noun's pattern.

Common Error Patterns

Used wrong locative ending for the feminine declension pattern (e.g., -i for žena-type instead of -e)

žena-type (-a): locative -e/-ě (škola→ve škole). růže-type (-e): locative -i (ulice→v ulici). píseň/kost-type: locative -i.

Missing consonant alternation in žena-type feminine locative

Before -e in žena-type: h→z (kniha→knize), k→c (matka→matce), ch→š (střecha→střeše). After labials use -ě: Evropa→Evropě.

Pracuji v kanceláři.

I work in an office.

Kancelář (píseň-type): locative takes -i. No consonant alternation with soft-stem nouns.

Mluvíme o knize.

We are talking about a book.

Kniha (žena-type): h→z alternation before -e. Kniha → knize (not *knihe).

Bydlíme v Evropě.

We live in Europe.

Evropa: after labials (p), the ending is -ě (not -e): v Evropě. This is a spelling rule for b, p, m, v, f.

The distinction between žena-type (-e/-ě) and růže-type (-i) requires memorizing each noun's pattern. 🇷🇺 Russian speakers: Russian feminine prepositional (в школе, на улице) is very similar. The main trap is consonant alternations before -e which don't exist in Russian prepositional case. 🇺🇦 Ukrainian speakers: Ukrainian feminine locative (у школі, на вулиці) uses -і broadly, which maps well to Czech -i forms but may cause overuse of -i where Czech uses -e/-ě.
