Can describe locations using spatial prepositions with instrumental case
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Jdu na procházku s kamarádkou.
I'm going for a walk with a friend (female).
Kočka sedí pod stolem.
The cat is sitting under the table.
Park je mezi školou a nemocnicí.
The park is between the school and the hospital.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Tyto předložky se pojí s 7. pádem (instrumentálem). Většina z nich vyjadřuje polohu.

Pozor na za: S instrumentálem = poloha (za domem = behind the house). S akuzativem = směr (jdu za dům = I go behind the house). Podobně před, mezi, nad, pod.
S vs se: Varianta se před souhláskovými skupinami: se školou, se sestrou, se mnou.
Common Error Patterns
Used instrumental for direction or accusative for location with a dual-case preposition
Location (where?) → instrumental: za domem. Direction (where to?) → accusative: za dům. Ask kde? vs kam?
Wrong case after an instrumental preposition
After s/se, za, před, mezi, nad, pod (location) — always use instrumental. Check the noun's instrumental form.
Jdu na procházku s kamarádkou.
I'm going for a walk with a friend (female).
S + instrumental for company: kamarádka → kamarádkou.
Kočka sedí pod stolem.
The cat is sitting under the table.
Pod + instrumental for static location: stůl → stolem.
Park je mezi školou a nemocnicí.
The park is between the school and the hospital.
Mezi + instrumental for location between: školou, nemocnicí (both in instrumental).
