Negation with não, double negation with nunca/nada/ninguém
Can negate sentences correctly and use double negation
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Eu não falo espanhol.
I don't speak Spanish.
Não sei nada.
I don't know anything.
Ninguém veio à festa.
Nobody came to the party.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
A negação em português é feita com não antes do verbo. Diferente do inglês, a dupla negação é padrão!

Regra: Se a palavra negativa vem DEPOIS do verbo, não é obrigatório: Não sei nada. Se vem ANTES, não é opcional: Nada sei.
BP coloquial: 'Não' pode aparecer no final também: Sei não (I don't know — informal).
Eu não falo espanhol.
I don't speak Spanish.
Não directly before the verb. Simple negation — same position as Russian не and Czech ne-.
Não sei nada.
I don't know anything.
Double negation: não + nada. This is STANDARD Portuguese, not an error! Like Russian/Czech.
Ninguém veio à festa.
Nobody came to the party.
Ninguém before verb — no 'não' needed. But after verb: Não veio ninguém (both needed).
