Practice Exercises
Forgetting contractions (de o* → do). Omitting articles before possessives in EP (o meu livro in Portugal, meu livro in Brazil). Crase confusion. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English the/a don't change for gender. Must learn o/a/os/as. No contractions like do/na in English.

O livro está na mesa.

The book is on the table.

O (def. article masc.) + livro. Na = em + a (contraction). Mesa is feminine → a mesa, na mesa.

Eu gosto do café brasileiro.

I like Brazilian coffee.

Do = de + o (contraction). Gostar DE requires the preposition. Café is masculine → do café.

Vou à escola.

I go to school.

À = a (preposition 'to') + a (article). The fusion is called crase; the mark itself is the acento grave, not a stress accent. Escola is feminine → à escola.
