Word Order
Basic order: SVO (Subject-Verb-Object). Flexible for emphasis: important info can be fronted. Questions: verb-first or question word first. Unlike German, Finnish does NOT require V2 order.
Applying German V2 rule to Finnish. Placing verb at the end like in SOV languages.
Common Error Patterns
Applying V2 rule from German
Finnish does NOT require verb in second position. SVO is default, flexible for emphasis.
Minä puhun suomea joka päivä.
I speak Finnish every day.
Basic SVO: Minä (S) puhun (V) suomea (O) joka päivä (time).
Huomenna menen kauppaan.
Tomorrow I go to the store.
Topic-fronting: time adverb 'huomenna' placed first for emphasis. Verb stays second.
Mitä sinä teet tänään?
What are you doing today?
Wh-question: question word (mitä) first, then subject + verb.
