Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Il y a un supermarché et des restaurants dans cette rue.

There is a supermarket and restaurants on this street.

Il n'y a pas de lait dans le frigo.

There is no milk in the fridge.

Je suis arrivé en France il y a deux ans.

I arrived in France two years ago.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Il y a signifie « there is » et « there are » — la même forme pour singulier et pluriel :

  • Il y a un chat dans le jardin. (there is a cat)
  • Il y a des fleurs sur la table. (there are flowers)

Négation : Il n'y a pas de chat. (there is no cat)

Question : Est-ce qu'il y a un restaurant ici ? / Y a-t-il un restaurant ici ?

Il y a + durée : Pour le passé = ago : Il y a trois ans = three years ago. Je suis arrivé il y a deux jours.

Attention : Ne confondez pas il y a (there is) avec il a (he has) !

Forgetting 'y'; confusing il y a (there is) with il a (he has); articles after negation. 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'There is/are' maps well to il y a. The time meaning (= ago) is surprising.

Common Error Patterns

Missing 'y' or wrong article after negation

Il y a (not *il a). Negation: il n'y a pas DE (not *pas un/une/des).

Il y a un supermarché et des restaurants dans cette rue.

There is a supermarket and restaurants on this street.

Il y a works for both singular (un supermarché) and plural (des restaurants).

Il n'y a pas de lait dans le frigo.

There is no milk in the fridge.

Negation: il n'y a pas DE (not *pas du). Articles become de/d' after negation.

Je suis arrivé en France il y a deux ans.

I arrived in France two years ago.

Il y a + time expression = ago. Different from 'there is' meaning!
