Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Mon anniversaire est le 15 mars.

My birthday is on March 15th.

En été, je vais à la plage. Au printemps, je fais du vélo.

In summer, I go to the beach. In spring, I ride my bike.

Le lundi, je travaille.

On Mondays, I work. On Saturdays and Sundays, I rest.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Les jours (pas de majuscule !) :

lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche

Les mois (pas de majuscule !) :

janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre, décembre

Les saisons :

Les dates : le + nombre + mois : le 14 juillet, le 25 décembre. Exception : le 1er (premier) janvier.

Capitalizing days/months; using wrong preposition with seasons. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English capitalizes days and months. French doesn't! Au printemps (exception) vs en été/automne/hiver.

Common Error Patterns

Wrong preposition with season or capitalized day/month

No capitals for days/months. Au printemps (exception), en été/automne/hiver.

Mon anniversaire est le 15 mars.

My birthday is on March 15th.

Date format: le + number + month. No 'on' needed (le already means 'on the').

En été, je vais à la plage. Au printemps, je fais du vélo.

In summer, I go to the beach. In spring, I ride my bike.

En + été/automne/hiver. Au + printemps (exception).

Le lundi, je travaille.

On Mondays, I work. On Saturdays and Sundays, I rest.

Le + day = every (that day). No capitals for days!
