Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

თბილისი ლამაზი ქალაქია.

Tbilisi is a beautiful city.

ბაზარში ცხელი ხაჭაპური იყიდება.

Hot khachapuri is sold at the market.

ეს ღვინო ძალიან კარგია.

This wine is very good.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Adjectives

An attributive adjective stands before the noun and does not change: ლამაზი ქალაქი (a beautiful city), დიდი სახლები (big houses - the adjective takes no plural ending).

As a predicate, the adjective takes the copula -ა: ქალაქი ლამაზია (the city is beautiful).

Practice Exercises

Learners pluralize attributive adjectives (RU/UK/CS/DE all agree adjectives with nouns): *დიდები სახლები instead of დიდი სახლები. Also dropping the predicative -ა: *ქალაქი ლამაზი instead of ქალაქი ლამაზია.

Common Error Patterns

Agreeing attributive adjectives in number/case with the noun

Drill noun phrases: the attributive adjective is invariable - დიდი სახლი / დიდი სახლები.

თბილისი ლამაზი ქალაქია.

Tbilisi is a beautiful city.

Attributive ლამაზი before the noun; the copula -ა attaches to ქალაქი.

ბაზარში ცხელი ხაჭაპური იყიდება.

Hot khachapuri is sold at the market.

ცხელი stays unchanged before ხაჭაპური.

ეს ღვინო ძალიან კარგია.

This wine is very good.

Predicative use: კარგი + copula -ა = კარგია.
