Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

תל אביב יוֹתֵר גְּדוֹלָה מֵחֵיפָה.

Tel Aviv is bigger than Haifa.

ירושלים הִיא הֲכִי עַתִּיקָה.

Jerusalem is the most ancient.

הקפה הזה יוֹתֵר טוֹב מהאחר.

This coffee is better than the other.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

בעברית השוואה נוצרת עם יוֹתֵר + תואר + מִ- (יותר גדול מ...) ולא על ידי שינוי צורת התואר כמו באנגלית.

עֶלְיוֹן: הֲכִי + תואר (הכי גדול = the biggest).

חריגים: טוֹב → יוֹתֵר טוֹב → הֲכִי טוֹב, רַע → יוֹתֵר רַע → הֲכִי רַע.

Common Error Patterns

Omitting מ- (than) after the adjective in comparative constructions

Adjective not agreeing in gender/number with the noun in comparative

תל אביב יוֹתֵר גְּדוֹלָה מֵחֵיפָה.

Tel Aviv is bigger than Haifa.

יוֹתֵר גְּדוֹלָה מֵ-: comparative = יוֹתֵר + adj (fem.) + מ- (than). The adjective agrees with the noun.

ירושלים הִיא הֲכִי עַתִּיקָה.

Jerusalem is the most ancient.

הֲכִי + adj = superlative. הֲכִי עַתִּיקָה (most ancient, fem.). No article needed unlike English 'the most'.

הקפה הזה יוֹתֵר טוֹב מהאחר.

This coffee is better than the other.

טוֹב (good) → יוֹתֵר טוֹב (better). No form change — unlike English good/better/best, Hebrew uses יוֹתֵר/הֲכִי.
