विशेष चिह्न (Special Signs)

हलन्त (्) — removes the inherent अ from a consonant: क् = k (not ka). Used to form संयुक्ताक्षर (conjuncts) — consonant clusters.

Common conjuncts: क्ष (kṣa), त्र (tra), ज्ञ (gya/jña), श्र (śra), द्ध (ddha).

Nasalization:

SignNameUse
अनुस्वारNasal before consonant: हिंदी
चन्द्रबिन्दुNasalized vowel: हँसना (to laugh)
विसर्गRare in modern Hindi: दुःख

Tip: Most conjuncts are formed by joining consonants vertically or side-by-side with halant. Reading practice makes them natural over time.

Confusing अनुस्वार (ं) with चन्द्रबिन्दु (ँ) — the first nasalizes before a consonant, the second nasalizes the vowel itself. 🇬🇧 English: English has no concept of inherent vowels or halant — the idea of 'killing' a vowel is new. 🇩🇪 German: German consonant clusters (str-, schr-) are sequential; Hindi conjuncts stack or merge visually.

Common Error Patterns

Confusing ं (anusvara) and ँ (chandrabindu)

ं before consonant (हिंदी); ँ nasalizes the vowel itself (हँसना)

Cannot parse a conjunct letter

Break it down: find the halant (्) — letters before/after it form the cluster

हिन्दी

Hindi (language)

न् + द = न्द — conjunct formed with halant.

हँसना

To laugh

ँ (chandrabindu) nasalizes the vowel अ in ह.

क्षमा

Forgiveness

क्ष = क् + ष — a common conjunct.

अच्छा

Good

च्छ = च् + छ — doubled/conjunct consonant cluster.
