Postposition se

से is a multi-purpose postposition with four core meanings:

MeaningExampleTranslation
I am from India
by/with (instrument)चाकू से काटोCut with a knife
Ram is bigger than me
from (time/since)सोमवार सेSince Monday

से triggers oblique case on the preceding noun: घर से (from the house), स्कूल से (from school).

Confusing से (from/with) with में (in/at). Using से for location instead of में. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses separate words (from/with/by/than). Hindi's single से covers all four — learners must rely on context.

Common Error Patterns

Confusing से (from/with) with में (in/at)

से = from/with/than/by. में = in/at. दिल्ली से (from Delhi) vs दिल्ली में (in Delhi)

Using wrong structure for comparisons

Pattern: X Y से adj है — X is more adj than Y (राम मुझसे बड़ा है)

I am from Delhi.

से = from (origin/source).

Write with a pen.

से = with/by (instrument) — कलम से = with a pen.

Sita is older than Ram.

से = than (comparison). No separate comparative word needed.

Talk to me.

मुझसे (fused मुझ+से) = with me / to me.
