Plural
Forming plurals with -k suffix and using them correctly with adjectives and numbers.
Form plurals of common nouns using -k with correct linking vowels. Use adjectives correctly with plural nouns (no plural on adjective).
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Nagy házak állnak a téren.
Big houses stand on the square.
Három könyv van a táskában.
There are three books in the bag.
A barátok a parkban vannak.
The friends are in the park.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Plural with -k
Add -k to nouns, using a linking vowel if needed (vowel harmony applies):
| Singular | Plural | Linking vowel |
|---|---|---|
| ház (house) | házak | -a- |
| könyv (book) | könyvek | -e- |
| autó (car) | autók | none |
| barát (friend) | barátok | -o- |
Key rules:
1. Adjectives do NOT take plural: nagy házak (NOT nagyak házak).
2. After numbers, use SINGULAR: három ház (NOT három házak).
Adding -k to adjectives: 'nagy házak' is correct, NOT 'nagyok házak'. Using plural after numbers: 'három házak' is WRONG, use 'három ház'.
Common Error Patterns
Incorrectly adding plural suffix to adjective in attributive position
Using plural noun after a numeral instead of singular
Nagy házak állnak a téren.
Big houses stand on the square.
Házak = plural, but nagy stays unchanged. The adjective never takes -k in Hungarian.
Három könyv van a táskában.
There are three books in the bag.
After három (three), use singular könyv — NOT könyvek!
A barátok a parkban vannak.
The friends are in the park.
Barátok uses -o- linking vowel (back vowel harmony from barát).
