Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Gyere ide, itt van a táskád!

Come here, your bag is here!

Innen balra, aztán egyenesen.

Left from here, then straight ahead.

Ott ül a professzor, menj oda!

The professor is sitting there, go there!

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Static: itt (here), ott (there). Directional: ide (to here), oda (to there). Source: innen (from here), onnan (from there). Use static with van/ül/áll; directional with jön/megy.

Apply this grammar in A1 course exercises

Practice Exercises
Learners use itt/ott for directional contexts. 🇬🇧 English: English 'here/there' covers both static and directional — Hungarian splits these into 6 words.

Common Error Patterns

Uses itt/ott with motion verbs (e.g. *Gyere itt! instead of Gyere ide!)

With motion verbs (jön, megy, küld): use ide (to here) / oda (to there). Save itt/ott for static position (where something IS).

Confuses innen (from here) with ide (to here)

Question test: Hová? (Where to?) → ide/oda. Honnan? (Where from?) → innen/onnan. Hol? (Where?) → itt/ott.

Gyere ide, itt van a táskád!

Come here, your bag is here!

ide = to here (direction); itt = here (static location). Two different words for two situations.

Innen balra, aztán egyenesen.

Left from here, then straight ahead.

innen = from here (source). Used for starting point of directions.

Ott ül a professzor, menj oda!

The professor is sitting there, go there!

ott = there (static); oda = to there (direction). Same place, different relationship.
