Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Ég heiti Anna.

My name is Anna.

Þetta er maður.

This is a man.

Ísland er fallegt.

Iceland is beautiful.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Íslenskt stafróf hefur 32 stafi. Auk latnesku stafrófanna eru sérstakir stafir: ð (eð), þ (þorn), æ og ö, ásamt áherslustöfum (á, é, í, ó, ú, ý).

StafurNafnFramburðurDæmi
Á áá[au] eins og 'ow' í 'cow'ár (year)
Ð ð[ð] eins og 'th' í 'this'maður (man)
É éé[jɛ] eins og 'ye'ég (I)
Í íí[i] langtís (ice)
Ó óó[ou] eins og 'o' í 'go'ól
Ú úú[u] langtúr (out of)
Ý ýý[i] (= í) (new)
Þ þþorn[θ] eins og 'th' í 'think'þú (you)
Æ ææ[ai] eins og 'eye'æður
Ö öö[œ] eins og 'u' í frönsku 'leur'öldu

Mikilvægt: Áhersla er næstum alltaf á fyrstu atkvæði: ÍS-land, MAÐ-ur, HÚS-ið.

Learners confuse ð (voiced 'th' as in 'this') with þ (voiceless 'th' as in 'think'). Accented vowels are distinct phonemes, not just stress marks. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Good with ð/þ (English 'th'), but struggle with á=[au], é=[je], æ=[ai] — these are NOT like English vowels.

Ég heiti Anna.

My name is Anna.

Ég [jeɣ] uses the special é vowel. Heiti has the diphthong ei.

Þetta er maður.

This is a man.

Þ in þetta is voiceless [θ]. Ð in maður is voiced [ð]. Two different 'th' sounds!

Ísland er fallegt.

Iceland is beautiful.

Í in Ísland is a long [i]. Note stress on first syllable: ÍS-land.
