Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Ég er frá Íslandi.

I am from Iceland.

Hann og hún eru vinir.

He and she are friends.

Þið eruð frá Noregi.

You (pl.) are from Norway.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Íslenska hefur persónufornöfn í þremur persónum og tveimur tölum. Þriðja persóna hefur þrjú kyn.

PersónaEintalaFleirtala
1. persónaég (I)við (we)
2. persónaþú (you)þið (you pl.)
3. p. karlkynhann (he)þeir (they m.)
3. p. kvenkynhún (she)þær (they f.)
3. p. hvorugkynþað (it)þau (they mixed)

Mikilvægt: Ólíkt ensku hefur íslenska þrjár fleirtölugerðir í þriðju persónu: þeir (allir karlkyns), þær (allar kvenkyns), þau (blandað eða hvorugkyn).

The three plural forms (þeir/þær/þau) confuse learners who expect one word for 'they'. Using það for people (it's only for neuter nouns). 🇬🇧 English speakers: Only one 'they' in English — must learn three forms. Þ [θ] at the start of pronouns is familiar from archaic 'thou'.

Ég er frá Íslandi.

I am from Iceland.

Ég = I. Frá takes dative: Íslandi.

Hann og hún eru vinir.

He and she are friends.

Hann = he, hún = she. Mixed gender plural: þau.

Þið eruð frá Noregi.

You (pl.) are from Norway.

Þið = you (plural). Eruð = are (2nd pl. of vera).
