Exam Skills:LetturaScrittura

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Il ragazzo e la ragazza sono a scuola.

The boy and the girl are at school.

Il problema è grande.

The problem is big.

La turista visita la stazione.

The tourist (f.) visits the station.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

In italiano ogni sostantivo è maschile o femminile. Non esiste il genere neutro. Il genere si riconosce spesso dalla desinenza.

DesinenzaGenereEsempi
-oMaschilelibro, ragazzo, treno
-aFemminilecasa, ragazza, pizza

Assuming -o is always masculine and -a always feminine. Key exceptions: il problema, il cinema, il tema (masc. in -a); la mano, la foto (fem. in -o). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English nouns have no grammatical gender. Must memorize gender with each new noun. The -o/-a pattern helps but exceptions are tricky.

Common Error Patterns

Wrong gender assigned to a noun, especially exceptions

Learn common exceptions: il problema/tema/cinema (masc. in -a), la mano/foto/moto (fem. in -o). Nouns in -e must be memorized individually.

Article or adjective doesn't match noun gender

Always match article + adjective to noun gender: il libro rosso, la casa rossa. Check exceptions list.

Il ragazzo e la ragazza sono a scuola.

The boy and the girl are at school.

Ragazzo (-o = masc.), ragazza (-a = fem.) — regular gender pattern.

Il problema è grande.

The problem is big.

Problema ends in -a but is MASCULINE (Greek origin). Il problema, not *la problema.

La turista visita la stazione.

The tourist (f.) visits the station.

Turista is both masc. and fem. — article determines: il turista (M), la turista (F). Stazione ends in -ione = feminine.
