比較 — Comparisons
Japanese has simple comparison patterns:
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A は B より [adj] | 東京は大阪より大きいです。 | Tokyo is bigger than Osaka. |
| A のほうが B より [adj] | 東京のほうが大阪より大きいです。 | Tokyo is bigger than Osaka. (emphasis on A) |
| [group] で 一番 [adj] | 日本で一番高い山は富士山です。 | The tallest mountain in Japan is Mt. Fuji. |
Which do you prefer? AとBとどちらが好きですか。= Between A and B, which do you like? → Aのほうが好きです。
Wrong word order in comparisons; Forgetting で before 一番 (scope marker)
犬と猫とどちらが好きですか。
Which do you like better, dogs or cats?
犬(いぬ, dog) + と + 猫(ねこ, cat) + と + どちら(which) + が + 好き(すき) + ですか
クラスで一番背が高い人は誰ですか。
Who is the tallest person in the class?
クラス(class) + で(scope) + 一番(いちばん, most) + 背が高い(せがたかい, tall) + 人(ひと) + は + 誰(だれ) + ですか
