Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

コーヒーを飲みます。

I drink coffee.

テレビを見ます。

I watch TV.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

を — Object Marker

を (pronounced o) marks the direct object — what the action is done to.

Pattern: [Subject は] [Object] [Verb]。

私はパンを食べますI eat bread.
私は水を飲みますI drink water.
私は本を読みますI read a book.

Also used with motion through a place: こうえんあるきます。(walk through the park)

Omitting を (relying on word order alone); Using を with intransitive verbs; Pronouncing を as 'wo' instead of 'o'

コーヒーを飲みます。

I drink coffee.

コーヒー(coffee) + を(object) + 飲みます(のみます, drink)

テレビを見ます。

I watch TV.

テレビ(TV) + を(object) + 見ます(みます, watch/see)
