Future tense and intention with -(으)ㄹ 거예요
I can talk about future plans and make predictions using -(으)ㄹ 거예요
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
내일 친구를 만날 거예요.
I'm going to meet a friend tomorrow.
주말에 뭐 할 거예요?
What are you going to do on the weekend?
내일 비가 올 거예요.
It will rain tomorrow.
한국어를 열심히 공부할 거예요.
I'm going to study Korean hard.

-(으)ㄹ 거예요 (Future / Intention)
Express future plans or predictions using verb stem + -(으)ㄹ 거예요.

Two uses:
- Plan/Intention: 내일 영화를 볼 거예요. (I'm going to watch a movie tomorrow.)
- Prediction: 내일 비가 올 거예요. (It will probably rain tomorrow.)
Formal version: -(으)ㄹ 겁니다: 갈 겁니다 (will go, formal).
Note: 거 is a contraction of 것 (thing). So -(으)ㄹ 거예요 literally means "it is the thing that will [verb]."
Confuse -(으)ㄹ 거예요 with -겠-. Wrong form after ㄹ stems.
Common Error Patterns
Wrong -(으)ㄹ form for the stem type
Vowel/ㄹ stem → -ㄹ 거예요, consonant stem → -을 거예요
Confused -(으)ㄹ 거예요 with -겠-
-(으)ㄹ 거예요 = plans/strong prediction. -겠- = polite conjecture, offers, or uncertain prediction
내일 친구를 만날 거예요.
I'm going to meet a friend tomorrow.
만나다 → 만나 + -ㄹ 거예요 = 만날 거예요. Vowel stem → -ㄹ 거예요. Expresses a plan.
주말에 뭐 할 거예요?
What are you going to do on the weekend?
하다 → 할 거예요. Common future question about plans.
내일 비가 올 거예요.
It will rain tomorrow.
오다 → 올 거예요. Here used as prediction (weather), not personal intention.
한국어를 열심히 공부할 거예요.
I'm going to study Korean hard.
공부하다 → 공부할 거예요. Strong personal intention/resolution.
