Atceries: Latviešu valodā nav artikulu (nav 'the' vai 'a'). Norādāmie vietniekvārdi daļēji aizstāj artikulu lomu: Šis galds ir liels. = This table is big.

Learners from languages with articles (English, German) overuse demonstratives as article substitutes. 🇬🇧 English speakers: May use šis/tas like 'the' — but Latvian needs no article. Use demonstratives only for emphasis/contrast.

Šis ir mans draugs.

This is my friend.

Šis = this (masc.). Gender agrees with draugs.

Tā grāmata ir laba.

That book is good.

Tā = that (fem.). Masculine: tas galds.

Ko tu dari ar šo?

What are you doing with this?

Šo = accusative of šis/šī (same form for both genders).
