Common Error Patterns

Forgetting to invert verb and subject in the main clause after a fronted subordinate clause

Using 'når' (time) where 'hvis' (condition) is needed or vice versa

Når jeg kommer hjem, lager jeg mat.

When I come home, I cook food.

Subordinate clause first → V2 inversion: verb 'lager' before subject 'jeg' in the main clause.

Hvis det regner, blir vi inne.

If it rains, we stay inside.

'hvis' for conditions; V2 applies — 'blir' before 'vi'.

Jeg jobber hjemme når jeg ikke er på kontoret.

I work from home when I am not at the office.

Subordinate clause after main clause — no inversion needed. 'ikke' is before 'er'.
