Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Hva heter du? Jeg heter Maja.

What is your name? My name is Maja.

Hvor bor du? Jeg bor i Oslo.

Where do you live? I live in Oslo.

Når er du hjemme? Jeg er hjemme klokka fem.

When are you home? I am home at five o'clock.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Norwegian question words trigger V2 word order: question word + verb + subject.

WordMeaningExample
hvawhatHva heter du?
hvemwhoHvem er det?
hvorwhereHvor bor du?
hvorforwhyHvorfor er du lei?
hvordanhowHvordan har du det?
nårwhenNår er du hjemme?
hvilken/hvilket/hvilkewhichHvilken bok?

V2 rule: Q-word + verb + subject + rest. No do-support!

V2 inversion after question words is the main challenge. 🇬🇧 English: English uses do-support (Where do you live?). Norwegian has no auxiliary — Hvor bor du?

Common Error Patterns

Fails to invert verb and subject after question word

After any question word: Q-word + VERB + subject. Never Q-word + subject + verb.

Adds 'gjøre' (do) as auxiliary (English L1 interference)

Norwegian has no do-support. 'Where do you live?' = 'Hvor bor du?' (not 'Hvor gjør du bor?').

Uses hvilken with neuter nouns or hvilke with singular

Hvilken = common gender singular, hvilket = neuter singular, hvilke = all plurals.

Hva heter du? Jeg heter Maja.

What is your name? My name is Maja.

'Hva heter du?' — question word + verb + subject. Literally: 'What are-called you?'

Hvor bor du? Jeg bor i Oslo.

Where do you live? I live in Oslo.

'Hvor bor du?' — no 'do' needed. Verb 'bor' directly after question word 'hvor'.

Når er du hjemme? Jeg er hjemme klokka fem.

When are you home? I am home at five o'clock.

'Når' = when. 'Klokka fem' = at five o'clock. V2: når + er + du.
