Polish prepositions govern specific cases. The same preposition can mean different things with different cases.

| w | + locative | in, inside | w domu (at home) |
| na | + locative | on, at | na stole (on the table) |
| do | + genitive | to, into | do szkoły (to school) |
| z | + genitive | from, out of | z domu (from home) |
| przy | + locative | near, by | przy oknie (by the window) |
| obok | + genitive | next to | obok sklepu (next to shop) |
Key contrast: w/na + locative = where (location), do + genitive = where to (direction), z + genitive = where from (origin).
Learners confuse w (enclosed spaces) vs na (surfaces/events) usage.
Idę do szkoły.
I go to school.
do + genitive for direction: szkoła → do szkoły.
Książka jest na stole.
The book is on the table.
na + locative for 'on a surface': stół → na stole.
Wracam z pracy.
I'm coming from work.
z + genitive for origin: praca → z pracy.
