Common Error Patterns

Using informal tu-forms in formal contexts

With strangers/elders: Cum vă numiți? (not Cum te cheamă?). Scuzați (not Scuză).

Not knowing vă rog can mean both 'please' and 'you're welcome'

'Vă rog' = please (request) AND you're welcome (response). Context determines meaning.

Bună ziua! Cum vă numiți? Mă numesc Maria.

Good day! What is your name? My name is Maria.

Formal register: 'vă' = formal you. 'Mă numesc' = reflexive verb 'a se numi'.

Mulțumesc foarte mult! Cu plăcere!

Thank you very much! You're welcome!

'Mulțumesc foarte mult' = thanks a lot. 'Cu plăcere' = with pleasure (= you're welcome).

Scuzați, nu înțeleg. Vorbiți englezește?

Excuse me, I don't understand. Do you speak English?

'Scuzați' = excuse me (formal). 'Nu înțeleg' = I don't understand. Survival phrase!
