Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Locuiesc în București, lângă un parc mare.
I live in Bucharest, next to a big park.
Cartea este pe masă, nu sub masă.
The book is on the table, not under the table.
Merg la piață și vin din magazin.
I'm going to the market and coming from the store.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
în (in), la (at/to), pe (on), lângă (next to), între (between), din (from).
în vs la is the main difficulty. pe = on surfaces only.
Common Error Patterns
Confusing în (inside) with la (at/to)
în = physically inside (în casă). la = at a destination/institution (la școală, la doctor).
Overusing 'pe' as a general preposition
'Pe' = on a surface. Not for 'at' (use la) or 'in' (use în).
Locuiesc în București, lângă un parc mare.
I live in Bucharest, next to a big park.
'În' = in (inside the city). 'Lângă' = next to. Prepositions don't change the noun form.
Cartea este pe masă, nu sub masă.
The book is on the table, not under the table.
'Pe' = on. 'Sub' = under. Simple spatial prepositions.
Merg la piață și vin din magazin.
I'm going to the market and coming from the store.
'La' = to (direction). 'Din' = from (origin). 'La' serves as both 'at' and 'to'.
