Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
La ora opt dimineața merg la serviciu.
At eight in the morning I go to work.
În august mergem în vacanță pe luni.
In August we go on vacation on Monday.
Magazinul este deschis de la nouă până la cinci.
The store is open from nine to five.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
la (at hours), în (months/years), pe (days), de la...până la (from...to).
în for months, pe for days, la for hours.
Common Error Patterns
Using în for days or pe for months
în = months/years (în ianuarie). pe = days (pe luni). la = hours (la ora 3).
Omitting article on time-of-day words
Time words use definite article: dimineaȚA, searA, noapteA.
La ora opt dimineața merg la serviciu.
At eight in the morning I go to work.
'La ora opt' = at 8 o'clock. 'Dimineața' = in the morning (with article!). 'La serviciu' = to work.
În august mergem în vacanță pe luni.
In August we go on vacation on Monday.
'În august' (month). 'Pe luni' (day of week). Different prepositions for months vs days!
Magazinul este deschis de la nouă până la cinci.
The store is open from nine to five.
'De la...până la' = from...to. Time range expression.
