Possessive pronouns: al meu/a mea, al tău/a ta
Can use possessive pronouns correctly
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Casa mea este mare și câinele meu este mic.
My house is big and my dog is small.
Aceasta este cartea ta sau a mea?
Is this your book or mine?
Prietenii noștri și prietenele voastre sunt aici.
Our (male) friends and your (female) friends are here.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Possessives agree with possessed noun: meu (m.), mea (f.). Position: after articulated noun.
Possessives agree with possessed noun, not possessor.
Common Error Patterns
Using same possessive form for all genders
Possessives agree with the POSSESSED noun: casa mea (f.) but câinele meu (m.).
Omitting al/a/ai/ale when no noun follows
Without a noun, use possessive article: 'E a mea' (It's mine), not *'E mea'.
Casa mea este mare și câinele meu este mic.
My house is big and my dog is small.
'Mea' (fem. — agrees with casa) vs 'meu' (masc. — agrees with câinele). Possessive AFTER articulated noun.
Aceasta este cartea ta sau a mea?
Is this your book or mine?
'Ta' = your (fem., agrees with carte). 'A mea' = mine (with possessive article 'a').
Prietenii noștri și prietenele voastre sunt aici.
Our (male) friends and your (female) friends are here.
'Noștri' = our (masc. pl., agrees with prieteni). 'Voastre' = your (fem. pl., agrees with prietene).
