Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Брат — брать

Brother — to take

Мать говори́т ти́хо.

Mother speaks quietly.

День и ночь.

Day and night.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Большинство русских согласных образуют пары по твёрдости-мягкости. Мягкие согласные произносятся с поднятием средней части языка к нёбу (палатализация).

ТвёрдыйМягкийПример (тв.)Пример (мягк.)
ББьбыл (was)бил (beat)
ВВьвол (ox)вёл (led)
ДДьдома (at home)день (day)
ННьбан (ban)бань (bath)
ТТьбрат (brother)брать (to take)
ЛЛьпол (floor)полька (polka)

Как определить мягкость?

  • Перед гласными Е, Ё, И, Ю, Я → согласная мягкая
  • Перед Ь (мягким знаком) → согласная мягкая
  • Перед А, О, У, Ы, Э → согласная твёрдая

Всегда твёрдые: Ж, Ш, Ц

Всегда мягкие: Ч, Щ, Й

Learners ignore palatalization and pronounce all consonants hard. The hard/soft distinction changes word meaning (брат vs брать). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no systematic palatalization. Learners hear soft consonants as 'consonant + y' but fail to produce a truly palatalized sound.

Брат — брать

Brother — to take

The soft sign (ь) after Т makes it soft [t'], changing meaning completely: брат [brat] vs брать [brat'].

Мать говори́т ти́хо.

Mother speaks quietly.

Ть in мать is soft. Т in тихо is also soft (before И). The soft sign indicates softness at end of word.

День и ночь.

Day and night.

Нь in день is soft (similar to Czech ň). Чь in ночь — Ч is always soft in Russian.
