Exam Skills:АудированиеГоворение

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Молоко́ — [малако́]

Milk — [malakó]

Го́род — [го́рат]

City — [górat]

Хлеб — [хл'эп]

Bread — [khlyep]

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Learners pronounce every О as [o] instead of reducing unstressed О to [a]. This is the #1 pronunciation error. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has vowel reduction too (schwa), so the concept is familiar, but mapping Russian О→[a] feels counterintuitive. Also struggle with rolled R.

Молоко́ — [малако́]

Milk — [malakó]

All three О's are written the same, but only the stressed one (ко́) sounds like [o]. The others reduce to [a].

Го́род — [го́рат]

City — [górat]

Final Д is devoiced to [т]. Unstressed О reduces to [а].

Хлеб — [хл'эп]

Bread — [khlyep]

Final Б is devoiced to [п]. This is like German 'Rad' pronounced [Rat].
