двое/трое/четверо: with male persons, children, pluralia tantum (двое суток) - and where they are banned
I can use двое/трое with the right noun classes and avoid them with female nouns.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Нас в купе было четверо: трое студентов и проводник с гитарой.
There were four of us in the compartment: three students and a conductor with a guitar.
Поход длился двое суток, и все двое суток шёл дождь.
The hike lasted two days, and it rained for all forty-eight hours.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Собирательные: двое, трое, четверо (выше - редко) + родительный множественного:
