Por y para

The A2 preposition problem: cause versus purpose, route versus destination, exchange versus recipient

Learning Goal

Can distinguish por and para for cause, purpose, route, price and recipient

Exam Skills:Comprensión de lecturaExpresión escrita

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

I swapped shifts with Marisa because of her daughter, who was ill; now I have the afternoon free to go to the doctor.

We went through Toledo on the way to Seville and bought marzipan for twelve euros.

For me, the best part of a meal isn't dessert: it's the conversation afterwards.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Practice Exercises
Do not translate from a single word in your language: the split does not exist there. Learn the pair through minimal pairs and fixed phrases. 🇬🇧 English speakers: The hardest case, because English 'for' covers both. 'I did it for you' is genuinely ambiguous in English and must be disambiguated in Spanish.

I swapped shifts with Marisa because of her daughter, who was ill; now I have the afternoon free to go to the doctor.

por = the reason it happened (looking back); para = the purpose of the free afternoon (looking forward).

We went through Toledo on the way to Seville and bought marzipan for twelve euros.

Two classic por uses in one line: route through a place, and price paid in exchange.

For me, the best part of a meal isn't dessert: it's the conversation afterwards.

'Para mí' introduces an opinion. 'Por mí' would mean something else entirely ('as far as I'm concerned, go ahead').
