Đây là bạn tôi, tên là Minh.

This is my friend, (his/her) name is Minh.

Tôi không phải là người Đức.

I am not German.

Phở là món ăn Việt Nam.

Pho is a Vietnamese dish.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Từ "là" — The Word 'Là'

Là is the Vietnamese equivalent of 'to be', but with a critical restriction: it's ONLY used for identity and definition (equating two nouns), NEVER with adjectives!

Rule of thumb: If the word after the gap is a noun/noun phrase → use là. If it's an adjective → NO là.

Negation: To negate là, use không phải (not không là!): Tôi không phải là sinh viên = I am not a student. For adjectives, just use không: Tôi không đẹp = I am not beautiful.

là in cleft sentences: Tôi là người Việt Nam = I am Vietnamese (identity). But: Tôi là người thích phở = I am (the one) who likes pho (cleft/emphasis).

The most common A1 error: using là with adjectives. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English ALWAYS uses 'is/am/are' before adjectives, so learners add là everywhere: *Cô ấy là đẹp. This is the #1 mistake for English speakers learning Vietnamese. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German also always uses 'sein' (ist/sind): *Sie ist schön → *Cô ấy là đẹp. Same trap as English speakers.

Common Error Patterns

Used là before an adjective

là only connects noun = noun. For adjectives: subject + adjective directly. Cô ấy đẹp (She beautiful), NOT *Cô ấy là đẹp.

Negated là with không instead of không phải

The negation of là is không phải (là), not *không là. Tôi không phải là sinh viên = I am not a student.

Đây là bạn tôi, tên là Minh.

This is my friend, (his/her) name is Minh.

là is correct twice: đây là bạn (this = friend, noun=noun) and tên là Minh (name = Minh, noun=noun).

Tôi không phải là người Đức.

I am not German.

To negate là, use không phải (là): Tôi không phải (là) người Đức. The là after không phải is optional.

Phở là món ăn Việt Nam.

Pho is a Vietnamese dish.

là defines what phở IS (a Vietnamese dish). Both sides are nouns, so là is correct. If you said Phở ngon (Pho is delicious), NO là needed!
