Exam Skills:Nghe hiểuNóiViết

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Tôi không uống rượu.

I don't drink alcohol.

Ăn cơm chưa? — Chưa ạ.

Have you eaten yet? — Not yet.

Đây không phải trà, đây cà phê.

This is not tea, this is coffee.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Phủ định với "không" — Negation

Vietnamese negation is simple: put không before the verb or adjective. But there are a few important patterns to learn.

TypePatternExample
Verb negationkhông + verbTôi không ăn thịt. (I don't eat meat.)
Adjective negationkhông + adjPhở không đắt. (Pho isn't expensive.)
là negationkhông phải (là)Đây không phải là cà phê. (This isn't coffee.)
'Not yet'chưa + verbTôi chưa ăn. (I haven't eaten yet.)
'No more'không...nữaTôi không ăn nữa. (I don't eat anymore.)

không vs chưa: không = simply 'not'. chưa = 'not yet' (implies it may happen later). Bạn ăn chưa? (Have you eaten yet?) — Chưa. (Not yet.) vs Không. (No.)

Double negation is OK: Không ai không biết = Nobody doesn't know = Everybody knows. This is standard Vietnamese, not an error!

Using the wrong negation pattern, especially không with là or confusing không/chưa. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Say *không là instead of không phải là. Confuse không (not) with chưa (not yet) because English uses 'not' for both. 🇩🇪 German speakers: Try to use nicht/kein distinctions that don't exist in Vietnamese. Say *không là instead of không phải là.

Common Error Patterns

Used không là instead of không phải là

là is negated with không phải, not không alone. Say: Tôi không phải là sinh viên, NOT *Tôi không là sinh viên.

Used không when chưa was appropriate (or vice versa)

không = simply not (permanent). chưa = not yet (temporary, will happen later). Tôi chưa ăn = I haven't eaten yet. Tôi không ăn = I don't eat.

Tôi không uống rượu.

I don't drink alcohol.

Simply put không before the verb: không uống = don't drink. Same for any verb!

Ăn cơm chưa? — Chưa ạ.

Have you eaten yet? — Not yet.

chưa = not YET (implies you will later). The particle ạ adds politeness. If you answered không, it would mean you simply won't eat.

Đây không phải là trà, đây là cà phê.

This is not tea, this is coffee.

To negate là, use không phải (là). NOT *Đây không là trà — that's incorrect! Always: không phải (là) for identity negation.
