Nominální styl a jeho rozplétání

Open any Czech grant application, ministry press release or university regulation and you will find sentences built almost entirely of nouns: Cílem projektu je zvýšení dostupnosti bydlení pro mladé rodiny. This nominal style is compact and impersonal, and Czech readers expect it in formal genres. It is also hard to read. At C1 you need both directions: to produce it where the genre demands it, and to unwind it when you want to be understood.

How it is built

• Verbal nouns in -ní / -tí: zvýšit → zvýšení, provést → provedení, zajistit → zajištění, přijmout → přijetí.
• Genitive chains: kontrola kvality výroby. English stacks nouns in front ("production quality control"); Czech rarely can, so it chains genitives after the head noun, in the opposite order.
• Prepositional formulas that take the genitive: za účelem, v rámci, na základě, z důvodu, v případě, v průběhu.

Unwinding in three steps

• Turn the verbal noun back into a verb: zvýšení → zvýšit.
• Ask who does it and make that the subject: chceme zvýšit, rodiny si najdou.
• Replace the formula with a conjunction: za účelem → aby, v případě → když, z důvodu → protože, po → jakmile, až.

The grant sentence above then becomes: Chceme, aby si mladé rodiny snáz našly bydlení. Same content, half the effort for the reader.

Which one when

Nominal style belongs in headings, forms, contracts, abstracts and the voice of institutions: the familiar station announcement z provozních důvodů is a model of it. Verbal style belongs in anything a person reads to understand: an e-mail to a client, an article, instructions. A chain of three or more genitives (návrh změny systému řízení) is your signal to rewrite.

Typical slips

• Formula with an infinitive: *za účelem zvýšit → za účelem zvýšení or abychom zvýšili.
• English noun stacks copied: *bydlení dostupnost → dostupnost bydlení.
• Nominal style where nobody asked for it: Provedl jsem nákup potravin → Nakoupil jsem.
