Dialects and the standard language

The two big dialect groups, the middle belt the standard was built on, and the features you will hear that are not mistakes.

Мета навчання

I can place a Belarusian speaker roughly by region and tell a dialect feature from a Russian interference error.

Two groups and a middle

Belarusian dialects fall into two large groups with a transitional belt between them, and the standard language was deliberately built on that middle belt - the speech around Minsk, Barysau and Vilnia.

Palessie

The far south, around Brest, speaks varieties often grouped separately as west Palessian. They sit on the gradient between Belarusian and Ukrainian, and whether to call them a dialect of one, the other, or a language of their own is a question with a long and unfinished history. A learner does not need to settle it - only to know that speech from that region will not match the textbook and is not wrong.

Features you will actually hear

 • The synthetic future: рабіцьму for буду рабіць, in the south-west. Perfectly good dialect, but not the standard form.
 • Hard р everywhere - in fact this one is standard; the dialects differ in how far the hardening goes.
 • Dzekanne and tsekanne vary in strength by region.
 • Lexical differences: бульба is universal, but the words for everyday things vary considerably from district to district.

Why this is in a grammar course

Two practical reasons. First, most recordings of natural speech you will hear are not standard, and knowing what varies stops you from copying the wrong thing or doubting the right thing. Second, Belarusian literature draws heavily on dialect for texture - reading Karatkievic or Bykau without knowing that is reading them flat.

The standard, briefly

The literary norm was codified by Branislau Taraskievic in 1918 and revised in 1933; the two resulting orthographies, тарашкевіца and наркамаўка, are treated in the register article. What matters here is that neither is a dialect - both are attempts to write the same middle-belt standard.

Вправи для практики

Typical errors: copying a dialect form heard in a recording as though it were standard, and assuming any unfamiliar form is a mistake.

Типові помилки

Treating a dialect form as the standard

Рабіцьму is regional; the standard future is буду рабіць.

Treating any unfamiliar form as a mistake

Dialect variation is not the same as interference.

Confusing dialect with trasianka

One is inherited, the other is Russian influence.

Placing the features in the wrong region

The synthetic future is south-western.

На Брэстчыне гавораць інакш, чым пад Віцебскам.

The two ends of the dialect continuum.

Літаратурная норма абапіраецца на сярэднія гаворкі.

The literary standard rests on the middle dialects.

Абапірацца на takes the accusative.

Дзед казаў «рабіцьму», а не «буду рабіць».

Grandfather said "rabicmu" rather than "budu rabic".

A south-western dialect future - good speech, not the standard form.

У кожным раёне бульбу называюць аднолькава, а вось цыбулю - не.

Potatoes are called the same in every district, onions are not.

Everyday vocabulary is where dialects diverge most.

Караткевіч свядома ўжываў дыялектныя словы.

Karatkievic used dialect words deliberately.

Dialect as literary texture rather than as error.
