Синонімія і точність слововживання

Words that share a meaning but not a register, an intensity or a set of collocates - and how to tell which one a sentence wants.

Мета навчання

I can choose between synonyms on register, intensity and collocation rather than at random.

Подивіться на ці приклади. Чи можете ви помітити граматичну закономірність?

Я вельмі люблю сваю маму.

I love my mother very much.

Ён кахае яе ўжо трэці год.

He has been in love with her for three years.

Моцны чай і дужы вецер з поўначы.

Strong tea and a hard wind from the north.

Свая хата - гэта не проста жытло.

Your own home is not just a dwelling.

Зверніть увагу на виділені частини. Що у них спільного?

Synonyms are not interchangeable

Two words rarely differ in nothing. They differ in register, in intensity, in what they combine with, or in where they came from. A synonym dictionary gives you the set; deciding within it is the skill.

Register

NeutralElevatedColloquial
ісцікрочыцьцягнуцца
тварабліччаморда
есціспажывацьтрэскаць
домжытлохата

Хата is listed as colloquial, but that undersells it: it is also the warm and culturally central word, which is why свая хата works where сваё жытло would be absurd.

Intensity

Sets that climb: непакоіцца - хвалявацца - трывожыцца - панікаваць; падабацца - любіць - кахаць. That last one is a real distinction and not a matter of degree: кахаць is romantic love only, любіць covers everything else, including people, places and food. Using кахаць about your mother is a mistake a learner makes once.

Collocation

Near-identical words take different partners. Моцны and дужы both mean strong, but моцны takes чай, вецер and мароз, while дужы belongs first of all to people and animals; of wind and frost it is heard too, but the dictionary marks that use as colloquial. The definitions give you the register; only the usage gives you the pairs.

Origin as a dimension

Because Belarusian has a Polish layer and a Slavic inherited layer, many concepts have one word from each, and they are rarely equal in feel: крама alongside магазін, гарбата alongside чай, ровар alongside веласіпед. The Polish-layer word tends to read as the more distinctly Belarusian choice, and in most independent writing it is the default.

The test

Three questions before you commit: does this word fit the register of the sentence around it? Is it the right strength? Does it collocate with the words on either side of it? If you cannot answer the third, look the word up in a real sentence rather than a dictionary entry.

Вправи для практики

Typical errors: treating a synonym set as interchangeable, and using кахаць outside romantic love.

Я вельмі люблю сваю маму.

I love my mother very much.

Любіць for family; кахаць would be wrong here.

Ён кахае яе ўжо трэці год.

He has been in love with her for three years.

Кахаць in its only sense.

Моцны чай і дужы вецер з поўначы.

Strong tea and a hard wind from the north.

Collocation decides: моцны for tea, and the wind takes either.

Свая хата - гэта не проста жытло.

Your own home is not just a dwelling.

The sentence works only because the two words differ in warmth.

Зайдзі ў краму па гарбату.

Pop into the shop for some tea.

Two Polish-layer choices, both entirely ordinary.
