指示代词 — Demonstrative Pronouns 这/那

这 zhè = this/these, 那 nà = that/those. They require a measure word before the noun.

那里/那儿他在那里。He's there.

个 gè is the default measure word — use it when you don't know the specific one. 这个 (this one), 那个 (that one). 这里/那里 = here/there.

Forgetting the measure word: *这书 is wrong, 这本书 is correct. The default 个 is always safe. English speakers: English has no measure words, so 'this book' translates directly — but Chinese requires 这+本+书 (demo+MW+noun). Russian speakers: Russian 'этот/тот' change gender (этот/эта/это); Chinese 这/那 never change — simpler! Czech speakers: Czech 'tento/tamten' decline by gender/case; Chinese 这/那 stay fixed — much simpler.

这是什么？ — 这 + 是 (no measure word needed when no noun follows).

这本书很好。

This book is very good.

这本书很好 — 本 (běn) is the measure word for books/bound items.

那个人是我的朋友。

That person is my friend.

那个人是我的朋友 — 那 + 个 (default MW) + 人. Use 个 when unsure of specific MW.
