Přídavná jména v češtině se shodují s podstatným jménem v rodě, čísle a pádě. V 1. pádě rozlišujeme dva typy: tvrdá (-ý/-á/-é) a měkká (-í).

TypMFNPříklad
Tvrdánový dům, nová kniha, nové auto
Měkkámoderní dům, moderní kniha, moderní auto

Tvrdá přídavná jména (většina) mění koncovku: velký stůl (M), velká škola (F), velké město (N).

Měkká přídavná jména končí vždy na a nemění se: poslední den (M), poslední šance (F), poslední slovo (N).

Jak poznat typ? Tvrdá přídavná jména v mužském tvaru končí na (nový, starý, dobrý). Měkká končí na (moderní, poslední, jarní).

Learners apply hard endings to soft adjectives or vice versa, and forget to match gender with the noun. 🇺🇦 Ukrainian speakers: Ukrainian adjective agreement (-ий/-а/-е) closely matches Czech (-ý/-á/-é). The soft adjective pattern is also familiar from Ukrainian. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German adjective endings depend on the article used (strong/weak/mixed declension), which is more complex than Czech. The Czech two-type system (hard/soft) feels simpler by comparison.

Типові помилки

Wrong adjective ending for the noun's gender (e.g., *nový škola instead of nová škola)

Check the noun's gender first, then apply: -ý (M), -á (F), -é (N) for hard adjectives

Applied hard endings to a soft adjective or vice versa (e.g., *moderný instead of moderní)

Soft adjectives always end in -í regardless of gender. If the masculine form ends in -í, it's soft.

Nový student je z Německa.

The new student is from Germany.

Student is masculine → hard adjective takes -ý ending: nový.

Česká kuchyně je výborná.

Czech cuisine is excellent.

Kuchyně is feminine → česká has -á ending. Výborná also agrees in feminine.

To moderní náměstí je krásné.

That modern square is beautiful.

Moderní is a soft adjective — same -í ending for all genders. Krásné is hard, neuter -é.
