Зверніть увагу на виділені частини. Що у них спільного?

English uses "in" and "to" for every place: in France, to Japan, in Paris. French chooses the preposition by the kind of place, and for countries by their gender. The same word means both "in" and "to": J'habite en France and Je vais en France.

Going to, being in

PlacePrepositionExamples
feminine country (most end in -e)enen France, en Italie, en Chine
masculine countryauau Japon, au Canada, au Brésil
plural countryauxaux États-Unis, aux Pays-Bas
city or townàà Paris, à Londres, à Montréal

A masculine country that starts with a vowel also takes en, because au would clash with the vowel: en Iran, en Irak.

Coming from

PlacePrepositionExamples
feminine countryde, d'de France, d'Italie
masculine countrydudu Japon, du Canada
plural countrydesdes États-Unis
city or townde, d'de Paris, d'Amsterdam

Je viens du Canada, mais j'habite en Belgique, à Bruxelles. - I'm from Canada, but I live in Belgium, in Brussels.

How to know the gender

Most countries ending in -e are feminine: la France, l'Espagne, la Suisse. The handful of exceptions include le Mexique, le Cambodge and le Mozambique, so it is au Mexique. Countries ending in another letter are usually masculine: le Portugal, le Maroc, le Sénégal. Continents behave like feminine countries: en Europe, en Afrique.

The common mistake is to use à with every place, *à France, or en with every place, *en Paris.

Вправи для практики
Using à for countries instead of en/au; confusing gender of countries. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses 'in' for everything. French requires en/au/aux based on country gender.

En для жіночої країни, à для міста.

Il vient du Japon et elle vient des États-Unis.

He comes from Japan and she comes from the United States.

Du для чоловічих, des для множинних країн.

Nous allons au Canada et au Brésil cet été.

We're going to Canada and Brazil this summer.

Au = à + le для чоловічих країн.
