Prepositions of place say where something is. Most match English one to one; the ones that do not are à, which covers "at", "to" and "in" with towns, and chez, which English has no single word for.

The multi-word prepositions end in de, and de contracts with le and les: à côté du musée, près des Halles, en face de la mairie. English speakers often drop the de (*à côté le café) because "next to" has no "of".
Where English uses "in front of", French uses devant with no de at all: devant le Louvre.
Chez means "at the home or place of": Je suis chez Pierre. - I'm at Pierre's. Je rentre chez moi. - I'm going home. It is also used for shops and professionals named after the person: chez le médecin - at the doctor's, chez le boulanger - at the baker's.
