The accusative marks the direct object: the thing you see, buy, drink or read. It answers Ko? (Whom? What?). English shows the object by word order alone ("I see the dog"); Latvian also changes the noun's ending.
| Noun type | Nominative | Accusative singular | Accusative plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine -s | galds | galdu | galdus |
| masculine -is | brālis | brāli | brāļus |
| masculine -us | tirgus | tirgu | tirgus |
| feminine -a | māja | māju | mājas |
| feminine -e | māte | māti | mātes |
| feminine -s | nakts | nakti | naktis |
In the singular there are just two endings: -u for nouns in -s and -a, -i for nouns in -is and -e (and feminine -s).
Negation keeps the accusative with ordinary verbs: Es dzeru kafiju - Es nedzeru kafiju (I don't drink coffee). With nav (there isn't, I don't have), the missing thing goes into the genitive: Man nav kafijas (I have no coffee). And the same -u ending appears in other cases (galdu is also genitive plural), so check the verb or preposition before deciding what case you are looking at.
At the Central Market: Lūdzu, kilogramu zemeņu un vienu rupjmaizi. - A kilo of strawberries and one rye loaf, please.
