Простий минулий час

Простий минулий час у перській: основа минулого часу (інфінітив без -ан) + особові закінчення, третя особа без закінчення رفت, заперечення نرفتم, розмовні тегеранські форми та відмінність від тривалого минулого می‌رفتم.

Мета навчання

Можу розповісти, що я робив учора чи на минулий Новруз, запитати, чи співрозмовник поїв, і сказати, чого не сталося, вживаючи простий минулий час.

The simple past is the most regular tense in Persian. Take the infinitive, drop its final -an, and you have the past stem; add the personal endings and you have the verb. It describes a finished action, like English 'I went' or 'I ate'.

Romanization follows Tehran pronunciation: â is the long a, kh is the "ch" of Scottish loch, gh stands for both غ and ق, and ' marks a glottal stop.

Past stem + ending

PersonEndingرفتن (to go)Spoken TehranNegative
من-amرفتم (raftam)raftamنرفتم (naraftam)
تو-iرفتی (rafti)raftiنرفتی (narafti)
او(none)رفت (raft)raftنرفت (naraft)
ما-imرفتیم (raftim)raftimنرفتیم (naraftim)
شما-idرفتید (raftid)raftinنرفتید (naraftid)
آن‌ها-andرفتند (raftand)raftanنرفتند (naraftand)

The third person singular is the bare stem: رفت (raft), he/she went. The stress falls on the last syllable (raftám); in the negative it moves to the prefix (náraftam).

Common past stems

InfinitivePast stemI ...
خوردن (khordan) eatخورد (khord)خوردم (khordam)
دیدن (didan) seeدید (did)دیدم (didam)
آمدن (âmadan) comeآمد (âmad); spoken اومد (umad)آمدم (âmadam)
گفتن (goftan) sayگفت (goft)گفتم (goftam)
کردن (kardan) doکرد (kard)کردم (kardam)
خریدن (kharidan) buyخرید (kharid)خریدم (kharidam)
نوشتن (neveshtan) writeنوشت (nevesht)نوشتم (neveshtam)

Compound verbs put the ending on the verb part: کار کردم (kâr kardam) - I worked; زنگ زدم (zang zadam) - I called.

In use

  • دیروز به اصفهان رفتم. (diruz be Esfahân raftam) - I went to Isfahan yesterday. (written)
  • ناهار خوردی؟ آره، خوردم. (nâhâr khordi? âre, khordam) - Did you have lunch? Yeah, I did. (spoken)
  • اومدم! (umadam!) - Coming! Literally 'I came': Iranians answer a call from the next room with the past tense, as if already there.

Not to be confused with می‌ + past

Adding می to the past stem gives a different tense, the past continuous: می‌رفتم (miraftam) - I was going / I used to go. 'I went' has no می: رفتم.

For English speakers

There are no irregular past forms to memorise: the stem comes straight from the infinitive. The work is on the present side, where stems change (رو for رفتن, بین for دیدن). Persian often uses the simple past where English uses 'have done': غذا خوردی؟ - Have you eaten?

Mistakes English speakers make

  • An ending on the third person: *رفتد - say رفت.
  • می in a simple past: *می‌رفتم for 'I went' - say رفتم.
  • The present stem in the past: *بینم for 'I saw' - say دیدم.
  • A separate 'not': *نه رفتم - say نرفتم.

Вправи для практики
🇬🇧 English speakers: adding an ending to the third person singular (*رفتد instead of رفت); putting می in a simple past (*می‌رفتم means 'I was going'; 'I went' is رفتم); building the past on the present stem (*بینم instead of دیدم); using a separate word for 'not' (*نه رفتم instead of نرفتم).

دیروز به اصفهان رفتم.

Учора я їздив до Ісфахана.

رفتم (raftam) = past stem رفت + -am. Written register; spoken: دیروز رفتم اصفهان.

پارسال نوروز را در شیراز گذراندیم.

Торік ми провели Новруз у Ширазі.

گذراندیم (gozarândim) = we spent (time), from گذراندن. Nowruz, the Persian New Year at the spring equinox, is the great holiday-travel season. Written register.

ناهار خوردی؟ آره، خوردم.

Ти пообідав? Так, пообідав.

Spoken: the simple past covers English 'did you' and 'have you'. آره (âre) is the casual 'yes'.

اومدم!

Іду!

Spoken: اومدم (umadam), from آمدم (âmadam) = I came. Said when someone calls you, as if you had already arrived.

علی دیروز نیامد.

Алі вчора не прийшов.
