Persian 'to be' has two sets of present forms: full words such as هستم (hastam, I am) and short endings such as -am that attach to the word before them, much like English I'm. Unlike English, the verb comes at the end of the sentence.
Romanization follows Tehran pronunciation: â is the long a, kh is the "ch" of Scottish loch, gh stands for both غ and ق, and ' marks a glottal stop.
| Person | Full form | Short ending | Spoken Tehran | Negative |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| من | هستم (hastam) | ـم (-am) | -am | نیستم (nistam) |
| تو | هستی (hasti) | ـی (-i) | -i | نیستی (nisti) |
| او | است (ast) / هست (hast) | است (-ast) | -e; -st after a vowel | نیست (nist) |
| ما | هستیم (hastim) | ـیم (-im) | -im | نیستیم (nistim) |
| شما | هستید (hastid) | ـید (-id) | -in | نیستید (nistid) |
| آنها | هستند (hastand) | ـند (-and) | -an | نیستند (nistand) |
After a consonant the short ending joins the word: خوبم (khubam, I'm fine), خوبی (khubi, you're fine). After a word ending in -e or -i it is written with an alef and a non-joiner: خستهام (khaste-am, I'm tired), ایرانیام (Irâni-am, I'm Iranian). After â or u the standard spelling adds a ی: دانشجویم (dâneshjuyam, I'm a student), دانشجویی (you're a student), and in the third person دانشجوست (dâneshjust). You will also see دانشجوام in informal writing. 'My student' is spelled the same way, دانشجویم, and context decides which one is meant.
The third person shows the biggest gap between registers. Books and news write است; Tehranis say -e after a consonant and -st after a vowel:
هست (hast) means 'exists, is there': نان هست؟ (nân hast?) - Is there any bread? Its negative نیست also means 'there isn't'. هستم and the other full forms add weight: من دانشجو هستم sounds like 'I am a student' or careful written style.
The past uses the stem بود with the regular endings: بودم (budam, I was), بودی, بود, بودیم, بودید, بودند. Negative: نبودم (nabudam, I wasn't). دیروز خیلی خسته بودم - I was very tired yesterday.
As in English, a present-tense sentence needs the verb: 'I'm tired' is خستهام, not *من خسته. The verb goes last, after the noun or adjective, so 'Ali is a teacher' is علی معلم است, literally 'Ali teacher is'. The negative is a whole word, نیست, not a particle in front: there is no Persian equivalent of putting 'not' before 'am'.

Вправи для практикиمن دانشجویم.
Я студент/ка. (коротка форма)
دانشجو + یم = دانشجویم (dâneshjuyam). After a vowel such as -u the short ending is written with ی. It replaces هستم and is the everyday choice in speech and common in writing too. You will also see دانشجوام in informal writing.
او معلم است.
Він/вона — вчитель/ка.
است (ast) = is: the normal written form. In Tehran speech it shrinks to -e after a consonant: معلمه (moallem-e).
ما ایرانی نیستیم.
Ми не іранці.
نیستیم (nistim) = we are not. The negative of بودن is the separate word نیست + ending; there is no short negative suffix.
شما خوبید؟
Ви в порядку? (ввічливо)
خوب + ید = خوبید (khubid), polite 'you are'. In speech the question is carried by rising intonation; formal writing may add آیا at the start.
علی خونه نیست، رفته سرِ کار.
Алі немає вдома, він пішов на роботу.
Spoken Tehran Persian: خونه (khune) is the spoken form of خانه, and نیست (nist) = is not. Written: علی خانه نیست.
دیروز خیلی خسته بودم.
Учора я дуже втомився.
بودم (budam) = I was: past stem بود + ending -am. Same form in speech and writing.
