Biernik — Accusative Case

The accusative (biernik) marks direct objects — the thing being acted upon. Used after verbs like mieć (have), lubić (like), znać (know), widzieć (see).

GenderNominativeAccusativeRule
Masc. inanimatedomdom= nominative (no change)
Masc. animatekot, studentkota, studenta= genitive (-a)
Femininekobieta, książkakobietę, książkę-a → -ę
Neuterokno, morzeokno, morze= nominative (no change)

Key distinction: Masculine nouns split into animate (living things: animals, people) and inanimate (objects). Only animate masculines change in accusative.

The animate/inanimate masculine split is the hardest part — animate accusative = genitive form. Feminine -a → -ę is consistent but easy to forget. English speakers: No case changes in English — must learn that 'I see the cat' requires a different form (kota) than 'the cat is here' (kot). Russian speakers: Same animate/inanimate distinction in Russian (вижу кота vs вижу дом). Transfer is easy. Feminine -у → Polish -ę is the only new pattern. Czech speakers: Czech has the same animate/inanimate split. Feminine changes similarly (-a → -u in Czech, -a → -ę in Polish). Near-direct transfer.

Mam kota.

У мене є кіт.

Mam kota — kot is masculine ANIMATE, so accusative = genitive form (kot → kota). Inanimate dom would stay as dom.

Widzę dom.

Я бачу дім.

Widzę dom — dom is masculine INANIMATE, so accusative = nominative (no change).

Czytam książkę.

Я читаю книжку.

Czytam książkę — książka is feminine, so -a changes to -ę in accusative.
