English negates with "do not": "I do not understand". Icelandic has no "do": it places ekki (not) straight after the finite verb.

With two verbs, ekki follows the first one, the one that carries the person ending: Ég get ekki komið. - I can't come. A very common English-speaker error is to put it before the verb, as with English "not": *Ég ekki skil.
When the object is a short pronoun such as hann, hana, það, it usually moves in front of ekki: Ég sé hann ekki. - I don't see him. Ég skil það ekki. - I don't understand it. A full noun stays behind: Ég sé ekki hestinn.

Like standard English, Icelandic does not stack ekki on top of another negative word: Ég skil ekkert, not *Ég skil ekki ekkert. Enginn declines like an adjective, so it agrees with its noun: engan bíl (m. acc.), enga peninga (no money).
