Spojky et, sed, quod

Connectors are the small joining words that stitch a sentence together: "and", "but", "because". Latin's three workhorses are et, sed, and quod. Learning them lets you break a long Latin sentence into manageable pieces and see how the ideas relate.

Latin	Meaning	Job
et	and	adds items or clauses
sed	but	marks a contrast
quod	because	gives a reason

Examples:

• Mārcus et Cornelia in horto sunt. = Mārcus and Cornelia are in the garden.
• Laboro, sed fessus non sum. = I am working, but I am not tired.
• Dormio quod fessus sum. = I am sleeping because I am tired.

A special habit worth learning early: Latin can attach -que to the end of a word to mean "and", joining it to what came before. Senātus populusque Rōmānus = "the Senate and the Roman people" (the famous SPQR).

For English speakers: two traps. First, quod looks like "what" or "which", and it can mean that in other contexts, but as a connector between two clauses it means "because": read the sentence for cause, not for a question. Second, do not confuse sed ("but") with any English word by sound; treat it as a signpost that the next clause will push against the first. When you meet et, sed, or quod, pause: each one tells you the shape of the clause that follows.
