Thanh điệu — The 6 Vietnamese Tones

Vietnamese is a tonal language with 6 tones. The same syllable with different tones means completely different words. Getting tones wrong doesn't just sound funny — it changes the meaning!

ToneNameMarkDescriptionExample
1Ngang (level)no markMid-level, flatma (ghost)
2Sắc (rising)áRising sharply (cheek/mother)
3Huyền (falling)àFalling gently (but/that)
4Hỏi (dipping-rising)Falls then rises (questioning)mả (grave/tomb)
5Ngã (broken rising)ãRises, breaks, rises again (horse/code)
6Nặng (heavy)Falls sharply, cuts offmạ (rice seedling)

The MA trick: All 6 tones on 'ma' give 6 different words — this is the classic example for learning tones!

Tone marks go on vowels: If a word has multiple vowels, the tone mark goes on the main vowel (usually the one that carries the sound). Rules: prefer ê/ô over e/o, prefer the vowel closest to the end if there's no ê/ô.

Northern vs Southern tones: The North distinguishes all 6 tones clearly. The South merges hỏi (˩˧) and ngã (˧˥ˀ) into a similar sound — so effectively 5 distinct tones in southern speech.

Tones are THE biggest challenge for speakers of non-tonal languages. Most learners underestimate them. 🇨🇿 Czech speakers: Czech uses length (á vs a) but not tone. May confuse tone marks with Czech čárky (length marks). Advantage: already used to diacritics on screen.

Časté chyby

Produced all syllables with flat/no tone

Every Vietnamese syllable has a tone. Practice the 'ma' series: ma (flat), má (rise), mà (fall), mả (dip-rise), mã (break-rise), mạ (heavy drop).

Confused hỏi and ngã tones

Hỏi (ả) dips down then rises smoothly. Ngã (ã) rises, breaks with a glottal stop, then rises again. In the South they merge — but for standard Vietnamese, practice the difference.

Ma, má, mà, mả, mã, mạ — sáu từ khác nhau!

Ma, má, mà, mả, mã, mạ — šest různých slov!

duch, tvář, ale, hrob, kůň, rýžový sazenice — vše jen 'ma' s různými tóny!

Bạn là ai? — Tôi là sinh viên.

Kdo jsi? — Jsem student.

Všimněte si tónů: bạn (těžký), là (klesající), sinh (rovný), viên (rovný).

Cảm ơn bạn rất nhiều.

Děkuji vám velmi.

Cảm (hỏi — klesavě-stoupavý), ơn (ngang — rovný), bạn (nặng — těžký), rất (nặng), nhiều (huyền — klesající).
